Objectives
The 16th Conference of Parties (COP 16) in 2010 initiated the formulation and implementation of National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) under the UNFCCC, aimed at helping Least Developed Country (LDC) Parties address medium- to long-term climate adaptation needs. Supported by the Paris Agreement, the NAP process has advanced to planning and implementation stages, relying on diverse climate and socioeconomic data. Earth observations (EO) provide critical information for developing and implementing adaptation plans. However, a disconnect exists between Climate and GEO delegations due to differing mandates and focus areas, compounded by communication and coordination challenges. GEO, through its Work Programme, promotes EO tools in NAPs, initially addressing agriculture and food security. Future guidelines will cover other areas like land degradation and coastal zones. As GEO plans its post-2025 activities, it aims to support NAPs by integrating EO solutions tailored to specific national priorities, with National GEOs and Regional GEOs enhancing EO adoption in climate adaptation efforts. This session will discuss dynamics, opportunities, and requirements for supporting the uptake of EO in the country NAP process leveraging Regional and National GEOs.
