Parallel Session: Weather, Hazards and Disaster Resilience

Objectives

GEO and UNFCCC Technology Committee have been co-producing a policy brief on technology and innovation for the [Early Warnings for All (EW4All) Initiative] (https://earlywarningsforall.org/). It highlights roles of technology with strong emphasis on Earth observations, in support of risk-informed climate and disaster resilience policy and action. The emerging findings include the fundamental value of risk information, especially exposure and vulnerability. For example, flood risk maps can visualize exposed areas with critical infrastructures, population, economic activities and ecosystems which have been frequently flooded and/or projected to be flooded more in the future, including due to climate change. The maps can also indicate what makes the exposed areas vulnerable, for instance, the high concentration of the aged populations, old buildings, endangered spices. Such climate information and disaster risk knowledge provide the basis for not only early warning system but also any infrastructure investment.

This session explores how the GEO community with its open data and solutions as well as collective knowledge can join forces with ongoing or emerging global partnerships related to the Early Warnings for All initiative to generate the afore-mentioned climate information and risk knowledge for developing countries. Presentations and discussion will consider how GEO can better support the most vulnerable communities and their populations to climate change adaptations and disasters to foster last mile delivery.
