Parallel Session: Preparing the GWP for the Conferences of the Parties

Objectives

This parallel session delves into the pivotal role of Earth observations in advancing global environmental agendas, with a particular focus on facilitating participation in key international fora. As nations gear up for critical gatherings - notably the Conferences of the Parties (COPs) of the Convention on Biological Diversity COP16 in October 2024, the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change COP29 in November 2024, and the UN Convention on Combating Desertification COP16 in December 2024 - GEO Work Programme leads will strategize on integrating Earth observations into policy frameworks.

With insights from environmental convention Secretariats, participants will learn how to effectively engage in these fora. GEO leads will showcase success stories, demonstrating the use of Earth observation data in addressing climate change, biodiversity conservation, and desertification.

From tracking climate change impacts to biodiversity conservation and combating desertification, these experiences underscore the transformative potential of Earth intelligence in achieving sustainability goals. Ultimately, GEO Work Programme leads’ participation should aim to foster dialogue on promoting the uptake of Earth intelligence products and services by Parties.

By exploring innovative approaches and partnerships, participants will identify pathways to enhance the accessibility, usability, and interoperability of Earth observation data and tools, empowering decisionmakers to make informed choices for environmental stewardship.
