A Virtual Platform for GEO Collaboration: Introducing the GEO Community Space

“We have created a GEO Community Space that is an intranet for the GEO community. It is your community engagement virtual platform where you can begin conversations.”

With these words, GEO Secretariat Director Yana Gevorgyan launched the GEO Community Space at the closing session of the 2026 GEO Symposium.

Many of us will recognize this pattern: engaging sessions, formal discussions, or even corridor chats at GEO events spark new ideas, connections and opportunities for collaboration. Mailing lists and social media broadcast updates, but they don't sustain a dialogue, and GWP activities have had no dedicated space to coordinate. This is a need the community has identified for some time.

Now, that space exists.

A space designed for global collaboration

The GEO Community Space is a shared online environment where individuals involved in GEO Work Programme (GWP) activities can share updates, post questions for expert feedback, discuss common problems, brainstorm solutions and discover collaboration opportunities in real time and in a decentralized format.

While mailing lists, blog posts and social media remain valuable for broadcasting information, the GEO Community Space is where the GEO community comes together for ongoing dialogue. Available 24/7 and 365 days a year, it bridges time zones and borders, making continuous and global connection not just possible, but effortless.

What can you do through it?

The GEO Community Space strikes a careful balance between open community engagement and focused, activity-based discussion.

  • General Channels: Open to contributors across all GWP activities, these channels offer a dedicated space to share news, promote upcoming events, or connect with colleagues working on shared topics of interest.
  • Activity-specific Channels: These private spaces are tailored to individual GWP activities. They allow for targeted discussions and are visible only to contributors within that specific activity. Many GEO Work Programme activities lack shared coordination tools between the many individuals that participate in them; these channels will help fill that gap.

Users can create posts in Public Channels and designated Activity-specific Channels, like and reply to posts, and receive notifications when new discussions unfold on topics they follow.

Who can access the space and how?

The space is currently open to all contributors validated during the GWP Phase II development process. If you are not yet a contributor of a GWP activity but would like to join, please contact the respective activity lead - their information can be found on the GWP webpage.

Access to the space is seamless: simply log in using your GEO account, the same one used to register for GEO symposia and plenaries, propose community events and submit GWP workplans. For step-by-step guidance, please refer to instructions how to sign in and how to use the GEO Community Space.

Explore, engage and share your feedback

Strong connections are at the heart of an effective Work Programme. This platform responds to a long-standing community need. We encourage all contributors to explore the platform, share updates, start conversations, and make use of this new resource to strengthen engagement across the community.

If you require support, or would like to share feedback, please email geo-wp@geosec.org with “GEO Community Space” in the subject line.
