
Evangelos Gerasopoulos
Biography
Dr Evangelos Gerasopoulos is the Vice President of the National Observatory of Athens and Director of the Institute for Environmental Research and Sustainable Development. Holds a PhD in the field of Atmospheric Physics and Dynamics with his research focuses on Earth observation, atmospheric composition, Earth system processes and climate, policy and urban perspectives. He is the Director of the Greek GEO Office since 2014 and he serves as co-chair of GEO’s Programme Board (since March 2021), member of EuroGEO’s HLWG and Head Delegate of Greece in the relevant fora. In Greece, he has been Member of the Special Scientific Committee on Climate Change of the Ministry of Environment and Energy (2020-2022) and has also served as Member of the Sectorial Scientific Council for the Environment and Energy of the National Council for Research and Technology (2014 - 2016). In his research career, he has published more than 140 publications in peer reviewed journals and 160 in conferences (h-index-48, 6300 citations), and he has participated in/coordinated 48 European and national projects, attracting about 10M€ at his Institution. Since September 2020 he is co-chairing GEO’s convener “Urban Heritage Climate Observatory – UHCO”, in collaboration with UNESCO’s World Heritage Center, and in January 2024 he was invited as member of the Experts Scoping Group of the IPCC Special Report on Climate Change and Cities.
