Statement of Vietnam

Becoming the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) official member in 2014, VietNam has consistently demonstrated its commitment as a responsible member, contributing to GEO’s shared mission of harnessing Earth observation data to address global challenges. Since 2019, VietNam is proud to serve as a member of the Executive Committee of the GEO Global Agricultural Monitoring Initiative (GEOGLAM ExCom). In this role, we have assisted in the development and execution of implementation plans. As a nation heavily reliant on rice production, VietNam has leveraged GEOGLAM to improve crop forecasting, resource management, and food security, delivering benefits not only domestically but also to Asia and beyond. In the meantime, VietNam keeps playing a pivotal role in the CH4Rice project, an initiative under Asia-RiCE within GEOGLAM. This work underscores our dedication to applying Earth observations for sustainability.

It is our honour to update our the national program at GEO-20 Plenary as below:

In December 2024, Vietnam Government released the Resolution No.57-NQ/TW on “Breakthroughs in the development of science, technology, innovation, and national digital transformation” which places strong emphasis on advancing science and technology, particularly in the field of space technology. A key priority is the development of strategic assets such as satellites and low- orbit satellite constellations. Leading this effort is the Vietnam National Space Center (VNSC) – Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST), a pioneering institution in designing, manufacturing, and launching "Made in Vietnam" satellites. Through the work of VNSC/VAST, VietNam is enhancing its capacity to monitor resources, respond to disasters, and support sustainable development, aligning closely with GEO’s mission and strengthening our contributions to global initiatives.

Moving onward, VietNam is committed to continue its engagement in GEOGLAM ExCom, the CH4Rice project and other GEO programs. We will persist its effort to harness advancements in space technology to foster collaboration, innovation, and the application of Earth observations, contributing to global sustainable development goals. VietNam reaffirms its steadfast partnership with the GEO community in pursuit of a more sustainable and prosperous planet.
