Group on Earth Observations – GEO Global Forum 2025 & GEO-20 Plenary
UkrGEO Office (Ukraine)
Earth observation and information obtained from both space-based and ground-based networks play an increasingly vital role in strengthening societal resilience to natural disasters worldwide. They provide decision-makers with critically important and objective data necessary to attract investments aimed at reducing the underlying risk drivers of disasters. However, despite notable progress in recent years, there are still significant gaps in current national, regional, and global efforts to address challenges such as air pollution, soil erosion, flooding, wildfires, and more. Ukraine also faces considerable obstacles in tackling these issues due to ongoing Russian aggression, which will necessitate extensive post-war recovery in the future.
Extensive work is being carried out in Ukraine to address the aforementioned challenges. Scientific institutions and organizations have developed methodological guidelines for a wide range of monitoring tasks, along with information technologies utilizing remote sensing data. These are being developed in cooperation with partners under the framework of the international GEOSS system. Ukraine has established the Ukrainian Center for Storage and Distribution of Remote Sensing Data from the Sentinel satellites of the Copernicus program. Another achievement is Ukraine's participation in the ERA-PLANET initiative under the European Research Area, as well as in several cross-border cooperation projects implemented by Ukrainian stakeholders.
In the area of food security and agricultural development, the Government of Ukraine is implementing modern land monitoring technologies to support precision farming and land use control, ensuring transparency, fairness, and objectivity of information for stakeholders in Ukraine’s open land market.
We fully support the implementation of the post-2025 GEO Strategy and its associated documents, which outline a vision of a world where Earth Intelligence drives the systemic transformations necessary to accelerate the achievement of all Sustainable Development Goals, and, in the long term, supports a new paradigm for people and the planet that benefits future generations.
