Statement of Nigeria

Group on Earth Observations – GEO Global Forum 2025 & GEO-20 Plenary

The Federal Republic of Nigeria, through the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) and under GEO-Nigeria, reaffirms its strong commitment to the GEO vision of coordinated, comprehensive, and sustained Earth observations. Rooted in national priorities and Agenda 2063, Nigeria leverages space science and geospatial intelligence to support informed policymaking, resilience, and inclusive development.

As GEO transitions into the Post-2025 Strategy, Nigeria is scaling its contributions, with GEO- Nigeria prioritizing climate adaptation, food security, disaster risk reduction, and gender-inclusive innovation—particularly empowering women in agriculture through space-based tools.

Since GEO-19, Nigeria has led impactful initiatives, including the Farmland Inventory Using Space-Based Technology in Federal Capital Territory, which mapped farmlands, analyzed soil and climate trends (2000–2020), and created a robust farmland database to support policy. A complementary project on Urban Expansion and Food Security used SAR data to assess land loss from urbanization and proposed suitable sites for urban agriculture.

In 2023–2024, Nigeria hosted stakeholder forums, supported the Space4Women program, and helped organize the 8th AfriGEO Symposium, reflecting our commitment to inclusive Earth observation. Nigeria’s continued seat on the GEO Executive Committee demonstrates its role in strengthening regional collaboration and data-driven innovation.

Looking ahead, Nigeria will operationalize EO platforms for land, biodiversity, and water monitoring; promote gender and youth inclusion; support policy harmonization and data interoperability; and champion African collaboration for resilient EO systems.

As we approach GEO’s 20th anniversary, Nigeria calls upon all Member States and stakeholders to renew their commitment to the foundational principles of the GEO community. We must work collectively to ensure equitable access to Earth intelligence and empower local communities with actionable, real-time geospatial information that supports sustainable development goals.

GEO-Nigeria stands proudly as a committed contributor to the GEO vision, advocating for a world where no one is left behind in the transformative ecosystem of Earth observation.
