Community Event Session 17: Safety, Security and Resilience of Citizens and Societies
Objectives
It is becoming more and more important to understand the link between events belonging to diverse domains (e.g. climate, hazards, disasters, health, energy, food) and their impact on livelihood and sustainability of populations to guarantee the safety, security and resilience of citizens and societies, not only for taking appropriate actions but also for policy-making and long-term strategies. As an example, climate change effects (including extreme weather events as wildfires, environmental degradation, rapid urbanization, adverse impact on agricultural activities and the resultant food insecurity, rising threats to public health) might threaten fragile societies, put at risk critical infrastructures or cause a disruption of economic activities. In this context, there is also the need of comprehend how new technologies (e.g. in the ICT sector), currently evolving at an unprecedented pace, can leverage Earth Observation (EO) to develop innovative and intelligent solutions for final users and relevant stakeholders.
In this respect, several international initiatives (e.g. GEO SPACE-SECURITY), EU funded programmes (e.g. Africa – EU Space Partnership Programme – Space for Early Warning) and African Union programmes (e.g. AMHEWAS - Africa Multi-Hazard Early Warning and Early Action System) aim at fostering the interaction with users and service providers at global, continental and local scale, exploring the possible usage of suitable space and ICT technologies, in line with relevant policies and supporting local ecosystems.
This community event will count with the intervention of international partners, fostering dialogue at global scale and addressing multigenerational audiences to discuss different perspectives and approaches to find the optimal response to security needs that require cross-domain cooperation. The event will also be the occasion to focus on different initiatives from different continents, shedding light on ongoing key actions across the entire Earth Observation Value Chain. Finally, the event will explore how to set a solid base for the development of joint initiatives amongst GEO activities for safer, more secure and more resilient societies in the GEO Post 2025 ecosystem.
