  • GEO showcases climate adaptation guidance at UNFCCC NAP Expo

The GEO community is participating for the first time in the NAP Expo with a coordinated presence, including several GEO initiatives and dedicated sessions highlighting how Earth observations support timely and effective climate adaptation measures.

The NAP Expo is an annual outreach event organized by the Least Developed Countries Expert Group (LEG) under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to promote exchange of experiences and foster partnerships between a wide range of actors and stakeholders on how to advance National Adaptation Plans (NAPs).

This is the seventh global NAP Expo since 2013, and this year the NAP Expo will take place in Gaborone, Botswana, from 22 to 26 August 2022. The NAP Expo runs in conjunction with the Botswana Global Adaptation Week 2022 which includes a Resilience Frontiers event, the 42nd meeting of the LEG, and the UN4NAPs Forum.

GEO’s presence will include keynote speakers, multiple parallel sessions with experts and country representatives, demonstrations of web tools and services, as well as a GEO booth for networking throughout the week.

The GEO Secretariat and the key GEO initiatives that are developing Earth observation-based tools and services in support of adaptation will be present, including initiatives such as GEO Global Agricultural Monitoring (GEOGLAM), GEO Global Water Sustainability (GEOGloWS), GEO Blue Planet, and Digital Earth Africa.

These GEO initiatives will seek validation of proposed sectoral guidance for integrating Earth observations into the technical implementation process of NAPs, particularly for agriculture and coastal zone management, and will explore avenues for collaboration with least developed countries and other developing countries, as well as international and regional partner organisations to boost climate action.

The participation in this event represents a major step forward in GEO’s work on adaptation and resilience in the context of the UNFCCC and climate action.
