We are facing an era in which it is essential to develop an earth observation strategy based on the utilization of satellite data and GEO Week 2023 will be a significant opportunity to understand the achievements and future strategies regarding international earth observation around the world.
The Republic of Korea is willing to activate its role as a member state with an understanding of the goals and desired values of GEO and hope to actively participate in GEO programs to strengthen international cooperation with its member states.
The Republic of Korea is currently promoting significant initiatives to utilize satellite data and vitalize satellite information services.
First, we are striving to provide smart satellite information services by ensuring prompt and accurate national safety services, expanding service boundaries to more life-oriented field, and promoting services which can support future-leading industries.
Second, we are supporting the development of the satellite information service industry by promoting research of core technologies for smart satellite information and expansion of its use, and establishing a satellite information service industry ecosystem.
Third, we are developing multi-mission satellites to provide more advanced satellite information services in the future and securing advanced satellite technologies for future missions.
Lastly, to advance the satellite utilization infrastructure, we are building an integrated national satellite operation infrastructure and establishing an efficient cooperation system among relevant ministries and agencies.
Furthermore, the Republic of Korea has been participating in the GEO programs and expand international coordination with GEO members.
Last year, the Republic of Korea worked with AOGEO members to explore ways to strengthen AOGEO’s role to achieve our vision of a world where decisions and actions are informed by coordinated, comprehensive and sustained Earth Observations at the 15th Asia-Oceania Group for Earth Observation (AOGEO) Symposium
We are also supporting GEO Blue Planet's program of using ocean observation data from satellites to solve social problems. To this end, the Republic of Korea has opened a GEO Blue Planet Asia office at Korea Maritime Institute. In this year, the 6th GEO Blue Planet Symposium was held in Seoul Korea, from October 31 to November 2 to discuss "Digital Solutions for Sustainable Oceans.
Last but not least, we have successfully hosted two domestic workshops to share the status of satellite utilization programs of related organizations and to discuss a strategy for international cooperation with other member states.
In the future, the Republic of Korea will strive to further expand and develop its activities and achievements to contribute more to the GEO community's values of improves the availability, access and use of Earth observations for a sustainable planet.
