The Global Ecosystems Atlas beta is live

The Global Ecosystems Atlas is a collaborative effort to build the world’s most comprehensive, standardised resource on the distribution of all ecosystems. Convened by the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) with the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), it supports national reporting, corporate disclosure, private investment, conservation and local action, while complementing existing initiatives.

As a digital public good, it provides a multi-layer, trusted foundation for ecosystem intelligence that countries, communities, businesses and solution providers can integrate and build on. With 2030 as the convergence point for global environmental goals, the Global Ecosystems Atlas will be the shared evidence base that shows where ecosystems are, how they are changing, where action is working and where ambition must increase.

Now, you can get a first public look at Global Ecosystems Atlas.

What you can do:

  • Explore the interactive web viewer by ecosystem type, region or country
  • Generate summary statistics and data graphics.
  • Upload or draw your own area of interest and get statistics for it.
  • Use the public API to pull area statistics, query metadata and access map services.
  • Go straight to the original input datasets, in their native resolution and classification, via the source providers listed in the Data Sources section.

Coming with the full release in early-2027 you'll be able to get downloadable GIS data, plus access through Esri’s Living Atlas and Google Earth Engine.
