Remembering Paolo Mazzetti: A Legacy of Science, Kindness and Collaboration

The GEO community is mourning the sudden loss of Paolo, a colleague, scientist, and friend whose contribution extended far beyond his technical expertise.
Paolo Mazzetti served as first researcher at the Italian National Research Council and contributed to GEO for more than 15 years, including as the Principal for Italy on the Programe Board. Through his work on the GEO DAB and active member of the GEO Infrastructure Development Task Team (GIDTT), he helped advance the development of GEOSS and improve access to diverse Earth observation resources. His work leaves a lasting mark on both GEO’s technical development and its international community.
In a message to his family, GEO colleagues in Geneva and around the world expressed their profound condolences, remembering Paolo as “a true pillar” of the meetings and working groups in which he participated. He was someone colleagues turned to when they needed guidance, when scientific decisions became complex, and when difficult questions required balance, judgement and a strong ethical compass.
Yet the many messages shared by the GEO community show that Paolo’s legacy cannot be measured only through his scientific achievements.
Colleagues from across the world described him as humble, kind, approachable, patient and generous with his knowledge. They recalled his ability to listen carefully and give genuine attention to others. He created an atmosphere in which people felt comfortable sharing ideas, even when discussions were difficult or opinions differed.
His greatest strength was the way he connected expertise with humanity.
Across messages from Japan, Brazil, China, Europe, Canada, the United States and many other countries, colleagues remembered his smile, his humor and his warmth. Some recalled meeting him at GEO conferences around the world; others worked with him for many years. For all of them, the memories were deeply personal.
These memories reveal something important about scientific communities. Progress depends not only on knowledge, technology, and data. It also depends on trust, communication, and relationships between people.
Paolo embodied this spirit, the GEO Spirit.
He demonstrated that scientific excellence and humility can exist together. He showed that disagreement can become constructive when people listen to one another. He understood that sharing knowledge strengthens a community and that collaboration works best when it is built on respect.
His colleagues will continue to carry these lessons forward.
The GEO community will continue to meet, collaborate, exchange knowledge and work toward a better understanding of our changing planet. In those future conversations, Paolo’s absence will be felt. There will be an empty place where his voice, insight, and humor once contributed to the discussion.
But his influence will remain.
It will live on in the projects he helped shape, the knowledge he shared, the colleagues he supported, and the friendships he created.
Paolo leaves behind not only a scientific legacy, but a human one.
He will be remembered with gratitude, respect and affection — as a great scientist, a generous colleague, a trusted friend, and above all, as a genuinely good person.
We extend our deepest condolences to Paolo’s family, friends, and colleagues. His contribution to GEO—and the kindness with which he made it—will not be forgotten.
