Session 3: Open In Situ Data
Objectives
Convene GWP activities, data providers, and key players such as UN agencies to discuss gaps and showcase existing solutions that are advancing in situ data sharing.
The GEO community still struggles to have access to enough in situ data to fulfill their mission, either because of gaps in coverage or because of limitations on use. This session will be divided into two parts.
The first part will focus on the needs for in situ data in GEO and will put focus on requirements coming from various essential variables for thematic domains such as climate, mountain environments, climate, oceans, and urban resilience.
The second part will showcase advancements in sharing in situ data following the GEO and FAIR principles and how gaps in data access may be resolved technically and by organizing communities in different regions and fostering international collaboration, including with UN agencies.
Through a diverse range of speakers covering several regions and thematic areas where GEO is active, this session will also help advance the discussions on the future evolution of the GEO infrastructure, particularly on connecting better with existing in situ data providers and promoting sharing of such data.
