Community Event Session 15: The Digital Twin of the Ocean: from Observations to Impact and a Resilient & Inclusive Blue Economy

Objectives

The Digital Twin of the Ocean is a collaborative initiative that enables stakeholders to make science-based decisions based on advanced knowledge of the ocean’s state, thanks to cutting-edge digital tools. It offers a comprehensive framework for ocean experts, scientists, citizens, and stakeholders to better understand our ocean, assess its current state ("Now"), predict its future ("Next"), and make science-based decisions ("What-If"). This is made possible through unified access to ocean information from in situ sensors and satellite sensors, ocean modelling using physical models or AI, and expert applications that transform data into meaningful information for the benefit of all, in a collaborative manner.
During the session, ocean information experts from in situ networks like the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) and the European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet), as well as space missions from NASA/CNES (SWOT) and Copernicus Sentinel (ESA/EUMETSAT), will explain how this information is gathered to assess the “Now.” Additionally, modelling experts from OceanPredict and the Copernicus Marine Service will explain how operational oceanography can address the “Next.” Finally, application solutions in various fields such as plastic pollution, biodiversity, and ocean climate will demonstrate the “what-if” scenarios.

An example of collaboration with the Lighthouse projects is provided by the Oceanids project, which will be presented in the session as part of the Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change. By bringing spatial and non-spatial data and services under a single-access window platform for Climate-Informed Maritime Spatial Planning (CI-MSP), Oceanids supports regional authorities and stakeholders in fostering a resilient and inclusive blue economy in coastal areas.
