Community Event Session 5: Joint Regional GEOs Event
Description
The Group on Earth Observations (GEO) established four Regional GEOs—AfriGEO (Africa), AmeriGEO (Americas), AOGEO (Asia-Oceania), and EuroGEO (Europe)—to enhance regional collaboration, address region-specific challenges, and engage local stakeholders in Earth observation initiatives. These groups play a distinct role in GEO’s structure by coordinating members, aligning global GEO activities with regional priorities, and driving region-specific initiatives that advance GEO’s mission.
As GEO enters the post-2025 era, it is committed to transforming its vision of "Earth Intelligence for All" into action. This means delivering integrated Earth and social science-derived knowledge and insights that inform strategic decisions and empowers societies to tackle environmental, societal, and economic challenges with long-term impact. Regional GEOs will be key enablers of GEO’s strategy by ensuring a coordinated regional contribution to GEO and synergies with regionally-relevant actions and solutions.
At the GEO Global Forum 2025, a first-ever joint session for all Regional GEOs is being proposed. This session aims to enhance collaboration and coordination, fostering cross-regional knowledge exchange, strengthening strategic alignment, and establishing a framework for sustained engagement, cooperation, and joint initiatives.
Specifically, the session will provide the opportunity to:
- Facilitate cross-regional knowledge sharing, leveraging diverse experiences and leadership strategies in GEO activities.
- Discuss how Regional GEOs are aligning their work plans and priorities with the transition to Earth intelligence and the GEO Post-2025 Strategy.
- Identify synergies to streamline efforts, improve alignment, and enhance engagement with countries and international organizations.
- Discuss a structured mechanism that encourages greater engagement and cooperation with the GEO Secretariat and among Regional GEOs.
- Discuss the preliminary ideas about Regional GEOs in the GEO governance structure and the Rules of Procedure (RoP) following PB’s recommendation to eliminate Regional GEOs from the new GWP.
- Understand updates to the GEO membership process and strategies for Regional GEOs to attract and engage new members.
