Ian McCallum is the Research Group Leader of Novel Data Ecosystems For Sustainability (NODES), within the Advancing Systems Analysis (ASA) Program at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), in Austria. He holds a graduate degree in Forest Science, where he specialized in the application of geographic information systems to issues surrounding view-shed analysis and wildlife habitat, and a doctoral degree applying satellite derived biophysical variables to model vegetation productivity. Prior to joining IIASA, he worked for both forest industry and forest consulting firms in central and western Canada and the United States. He contributes to numerous research projects applying geo-spatial analysis to global environmental problems. He helped develop the Geo-Wiki, a globally recognised Citizen Science platform for Earth observation. His research interests lie along areas of environmental monitoring, earth observation, citizen science, the carbon cycle and natural hazards.
