Nicholas Murray is Associate Professor of Global Ecology and Conservation at James Cook University’s College of Science and Engineering. He has had many roles in international and national initiatives, including leading the Global Intertidal Change project, and contributing to Allen Coral Atlas, Global Mangrove Watch, and Forest Landscape Integrity Index. He is also a longstanding member of the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems Global Team.
Nick’s research interests span global ecosystem dynamics, ecosystem risk assessment, large-scale monitoring of environmental change and conservation of wide-ranging migratory species. He has published over 70 articles on these topics, and has a strong record of developing free, open access datasets and software to support ecosystem conservation, including several high-resolution global datasets and national wall-to-wall ecosystem maps. Nick’s software, including R packages and the free Remote Ecosystem Monitoring and Assessment Pipeline have been used to support ecosystem conservation by over 25,000 users worldwide.
Nick’s work has been recognised with awards including the Eureka Prize (as part of a global conservation team), the IUCN Commission on Ecosystem Management, Google Geo for Good, and the Australian Academy of Sciences. He serves as an Associate Editor for Remote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation and Remote Sensing. Nick's lab website reports recent news, publications, and open-source datasets and software developed in our group. You can also read profiles on Nick's research in Nature and Science.
