Mr. Samuel Joseph Gama has a Master of Science Degree in Disaster Management (Hydrology Engineering) obtained in 2017 from International Center for Hazards and Water Disaster Risk Management (ICHARM) - University of Tokyo, Japan. He has knowledge in climate change and variability, Hydrology, hydraulics and River Channel design, research, finance, Project Management and Climate Change, Disaster Risk Management. Over the years Mr. Gama has gained practical work experience in climate change adaptation; livelihoods and resilience building; Community Based Early Warning Systems, Resource mobilisation strategies; Disaster Risk Management; advocacy; watershed and wetlands management and conservation agriculture/climate smart agriculture technologies through program design, implementation, monitoring, evaluation and learning, trainings and social research.
Mr. Gama is currently holding a position of Principal Mitigation Officer, responsible for coordinating disaster risk/ resilience management programmes in Malawi as well as overseeing the implementation of a number of disaster risk management programmes by the department and other stakeholders.
In his present work with the department, Mr. Gama has been involved in the coordination of a number of disaster risk management projects, including early warning syets projects, which aim at increasing the resilience of households, communities and the nation to disaster risks and the resilience building projects in the country. The Officer has been involvement in the setting up and establishment of the national Early Warning System (through the Operation Decision Support Systems- ODSS) and the telemetry Community Flood Early Warning Systems through the Green Climate Fund Early Warning Systems project currently being implemented in Malawi. The officer has further been instrumental in the development of the National Guidelines for Establishment Early Warning Systems in Malawi, development of the Multi-Hazard Early Warning Systems Protocols and Standards for Malawi as well as a National Focal Point on the forecast Based Financing in Malawi. Mr. Gama is currently coordinating a sub-project on a National-wide comprehensive Multi-Hazard Risk Assessment with support from the World Bank under the Malawi Resilience and Disaster Risk Management Project. Mr. Gama is further involved in the overall coordination of the Urban Resilience Project currently being implemented with funding from the Adaptation Fund through the UN-Habitat. The project is aimed at strengthening urban climate resilience by working with various levels of government and stakeholders and ensuring strong participation, in particular, of the most marginalized and vulnerable groups.
