Dr Fernando R. Echavarria works as an advisor on international Earth observation, geospatial and geothermal science and technology issues at the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs (OES). He has led several public private partnerships on geospatial science and technology for the U.S. government at large international meetings including: the World Summit on Sustainable Development (Johannesburg, 2002), the World Conference on Disaster Reduction (Kobe, 2005), the World Summit on the Information Society (Tunis, 2005), the World Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio, 2012), the Sixth World Urban Forum (Medellin, 2014). Dr. Echavarria has degrees in energy resources engineering and remote sensing from Stanford University, Florida Atlantic University and the University of South Carolina. He has held teaching positions at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, George Washington University and the U.S. Department of State’s Foreign Service Institute. His publications have appeared in the following journals: Alternative Energy Africa, Ambio-Swedish Academy of Sciences, GeoCarto International, International Journal of Remote Sensing, Revista Geográfica-IPGH, and others. Fernando is a member of GEO DRR Working Group, supporting subgroup 3, involved in Tasks 3.1.
