GEOBON: Putting Biodiversity-Inclusive Spatial Planning on the Map: How Spatial Intelligence is Being Harnessed to Operationalize Target 1 in National Contexts

Summary:

Target 1 states that Parties will need to bring the loss of areas of high biodiversity importance close to zero by 2030, as well as expand the coverage of effective management across lands and waters through participatory integrated biodiversity-inclusive spatial planning. Yet definitions and best practice for this process-based target remain outstanding. To support the critical delivery of Target 1, this side event will showcase a number of approaches and tools and their application by Parties to develop integrated spatial plans for biodiversity and people. Action for Target 1 will also support Parties’ achievement of many other targets, including identifying areas for restoration (Target 2) and protection (Target 3) that provide powerful co-benefits for Targets 4-12.

This event will share 4 spatial planning solutions that have been used in diverse national contexts. It will also highlight 3 new guidances on spatial planning, hot off the press from DEFRA, FAO, and IUCN. The goal is to foster peer-to-peer exchange and highlight tools that are available to all Parties to support their work around Target 1 and the Global Biodiversity Framework more broadly.
