Community Event - AI4EO: Advancing Earth Intelligence through artificial intelligence and Earth observation

Description

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming how Earth observation (EO) data are analyzed and translated into actionable Earth Intelligence for addressing global environmental and societal challenges. As the volume and complexity of EO data continue to expand, advances in AI, including foundation models, generative AI, and intelligent agents, are creating new opportunities for large-scale environmental monitoring, predictive analytics, and decision support.

Within the GEO Work Programme, the AI4EO Enabler aims to strengthen the integration of AI into Earth observation by connecting AI experts, EO scientists, technology developers, and end users across the GEO community, while accelerating the adoption of trustworthy and scalable AI approaches that enhance the value of EO data for climate action, biodiversity conservation, disaster resilience, and sustainable development.

The AI4EO Enabler serves as a collaborative platform to foster innovation, cross-disciplinary and cross-sector exchange, knowledge sharing, capacity development, and responsible AI practices within the EO community, while supporting GEO’s Post-2025 Strategy for delivering accessible, actionable, and inclusive Earth Intelligence.

This community session will showcase recent advances in AI for EO, including geospatial foundation models, benchmarking of geospatial AI, and applications in biodiversity monitoring, environmental intelligence, and disaster management. The session will also highlight emerging AI tools and agentic workflows that can enhance geospatial productivity and transform EO analytics.

The session aims to:

  • Introduce the AI4EO Enabler and its ongoing activities within GEO
  • Present recent advances in AI technologies and foundation models for EO
  • Highlight AI applications for biodiversity, environmental monitoring, and resilience
  • Foster collaboration and dialogue among researchers, practitioners, industry, and GEO stakeholders working at the intersection of AI and EO
