2026 GEO Symposium / GEO-21 Plenary Official Statement of European Union Satellite Centre
The European Union Satellite Centre (SatCen), established in 1992, is an Agency of the Council of the European Union, supporting EU decision-making and actions by delivering timely and reliable geospatial intelligence services derived from space-based assets and complementary data. Through its analysis, SatCen enables EU institutions and Member States to address security challenges across a wide range of scenarios, including security monitoring, contingency planning and support to humanitarian operations.
Today’s security environment is undergoing a profound transformation. Global dynamics across political, environmental, economic and societal domains are increasingly interconnected, shaping a more complex and unpredictable landscape. In this context, security can no longer be addressed in isolation and requires a holistic approach that recognizes interdependencies across domains. This evolution is driving growing demand for geospatial intelligence capable of addressing multifaceted security scenarios and reflects the emergence of a new security paradigm based on integration and cross-sectoral collaboration.
In this context, the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) represents a platform to enable international cooperation for SatCen. Through its global network of Earth Observation actors, GEO provides a framework to engage with a broad range of stakeholders, identify synergies and contribute to collective efforts addressing global priorities.
Within GEO, the SPACE-SECURITY Convener, led by SatCen, focuses on connecting initiatives and stakeholders, facilitating integration across domains and identifying coordination and capability gaps to support operational decision-making. Many of these challenges do not require new data, but rather better integration and coordination of existing capabilities.
GEO is a unique forum to foster innovation and contribute to a more coordinated approach to address new emerging global challenges, ultimately reinforcing the role of geospatial intelligence in support of global security.
