Community Event Session 11: Earth Observation for Forests
Objectives
The session will showcase the transformative power of Earth Observation in the way we manage, monitor and report on forests - from mitigating climate change, advancing nature restoration and enabling sustainable commodity value chains.
FAO and partners have supported countries over the past decade through the Open Foris initiative in developing robust and transparent national forest monitoring systems, and in collaboration with many institutions through the Global Forest Observations Initiative (GFOI).
An introductory presentation will highlight innovative remote sensing and field based technical solutions, with a particular emphasis on open-source initiatives and sharing of country experience.
The session will feature:
- SEPAL, a powerful platform that allows users to query and process satellite data efficiently, tailor their products for local needs, and produce sophisticated geospatial analyses using cloud-based supercomputers and modern geospatial data infrastructures.
- two interoperable building blocks of a Digital Public Infrastructure for sustainable and deforestation free value chains; WHISP, an open-source solution that supports compliance for deforestation-related regulations through convergence of evidence at plot level, and INATrace, a traceability solution which intends to make agricultural supply chains transparent and fair.
- The launch of the Framework for Ecosystem Restoration Monitoring (FERM), designed to enhance the monitoring of restoration activities, offering valuable insights and support informed decision-making processes.
Finally, we will open the discussion on perspectives that long term satellite-based information can bring for ecosystem resilience.
