Global Groundwater Monitoring System
The International Groudwater Resources Assessment Centre (IGRAC) has taken the initiative to establish a sustainable Global Groundwater Monitoring System (GGMS). The system will provide spatially aggregated information on groundwater variables world-wide. The aggregation of point measurements is necessary to ensure representativeness of information in regional and global studies. The process of aggregation needs to be carried out by specialists having extensive knowledge on regional hydrogeology, measurement practice, water use, etc. Setting up a people network is therefore the most challenging task of GGMS.
IGRAC is developing a web-based application to assist the aggregation procedure, as well as the gathering and dissemination of information. As complementary to the terrestrial measurements, IGRAC is exploring possibilities to use GRACE satellite observations for monitoring the change of global groundwater resources.
